The Bahamas, officially known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas is a country of islands, cays and islets. The Bahamas, the site of Columbus's first land fall in the New World in the year 1492, is an English speaking country, which is administered by the Parliamentary Democracy and the Constitutional Monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its Monarch. The Bahamas lies to the north east of the Caribbean Sea in the Atlantic Ocean, to the southeast of the United States, to the north of Cuba, Dominican Republic and Haiti and to the northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands.



The population of the Bahamas is 330,000 and its capital and largest city is Nassau. Its currency is Bahamas Dollar. The time zone in the Bahamas is UTC – 5 and UTC – 4. The Bahamas is located near to the State of Florida in the USA. Bimini Island, known as the Gateway to the Bahamas, is the closest island to the United States. The Bahamas has a tropical to subtropical climate, which is often moderated by significantly by the waters of the Gulf Stream in the winter season. In the summer and autumn seasons, the Bahamas are prone to storm surges, heavy rain fall, and high wind due to the hurricanes that pass near or through the islands.
