Facts About Islands of the Bahamas

The Bahamas, located in the Western Atlantic Ocean, is an English speaking country comprising of 29 islands, 660 cays and 2380 islets (rocks) with a population of about 330,000 and an area of about 13,900 square km. The Bahamas Islands geographically lie in the same Island Chain as Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Turks and Caicos Islands. Bimini is the closest Bahamian Island to the United States, often known as the gateway to the Bahamas.





Most of the Islands of the Bahamas are low and flat with ridges not rising more than 15-20 meters and the highest point Mount Alvernia (63 meters) is located in cat Island. There are about 30-40 inhabited islands in the Bahamas and the main inhabited islands include: Grand Bahamas, Abaco to the east of Grand Bahamas, Southeastern most island Inagua, the largest island Andros Island, New Providence Island in which the capital city Nassau is located, Cat Island, Eleuthera Island, Long Island, San Salvador Island, Acklins Island, Crooked Island, Exuma Island, Mayaguana Island

Facts About Cat Island Bahamas

Cat Island is one of the districts of Bahamas and it is located in the Central Bahamas. The highest point of the Bahamas, Mount Alvernia, is on the Cat island, which is famous for a monastery called The Hermitage. Cat Island is thought to have been named after the then famous Pirate Arthur Catt or due to large population of feral cats. Historically, cotton farming was the main economy of the Cat Island but the present population lives by slash and burn farming (cutting and burning of forests to develop agricultural land and pasture for livestock).





Bark of Cascarilla, a type of plant native to the Caribbeans, is the main crop of Cat Island, which is exported to Italy where it is used as ingredient in many medicines, scents and Campari, an alcoholic drink. The population of Cat island is about 1650 inhabitants and the main settlement areas are Port Howe, Orange Creek and Arthur's Town. Cat Island, one of the most popular tourist destinations of the Bahamas, is the birthplace of famous Bahamian Musician Tony McKay, best known as Exuma.

Facts About The Bahamas Blue Lagoon Bahamas

Blue Lagoon is a private island situated about 3 miles from Nassau, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Bahamas. Blue Lagoon was once known as Salt Cay due to numerous salt marshes and it was a popular stopover for the pirates and private sailors during the 1800s who used to wait at the island before being permitted to enter Nassau Harbor. Blue Lagoon island remained unknown for many decades for want of proper living conditions and facilities.





In 1979, the island was purchased by a private party and its turn around took place during the last two decades. Today, the Blue Lagoon Island has become a paradise for the vacationers and it is famous as one of the best places for dolphin exploration.
