Facts About Islands of the Bahamas

The Bahamas, located in the Western Atlantic Ocean, is an English speaking country comprising of 29 islands, 660 cays and 2380 islets (rocks) with a population of about 330,000 and an area of about 13,900 square km. The Bahamas Islands geographically lie in the same Island Chain as Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Turks and Caicos Islands. Bimini is the closest Bahamian Island to the United States, often known as the gateway to the Bahamas.





Most of the Islands of the Bahamas are low and flat with ridges not rising more than 15-20 meters and the highest point Mount Alvernia (63 meters) is located in cat Island. There are about 30-40 inhabited islands in the Bahamas and the main inhabited islands include: Grand Bahamas, Abaco to the east of Grand Bahamas, Southeastern most island Inagua, the largest island Andros Island, New Providence Island in which the capital city Nassau is located, Cat Island, Eleuthera Island, Long Island, San Salvador Island, Acklins Island, Crooked Island, Exuma Island, Mayaguana Island
